Mount Saint Joseph Academy -- On the education of women largely depends the future of society.

NAIS Challenge

Challenge 20/20 is a competition sponsored by theNational Association of Independent Schools, or NAIS. This project, which includes groups from over 2,400 institutions from all over theworld, encourages a cooperative approach to address global problems.Based upon Jean-Francois Rischard’s book, High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve them, the 20/20 competition unites one team from the United States and a teamfrom a foreign country to join forces in tackling one of the twentydelineated global problems. Each U.S. establishment is partnered withanother group overseas.

The Mount will once again have two teams participating in the challenge, and both teams won honorable mention for their work.

TheIntectious Disease team, which  in 2006 won the NAIScompetition by unanimous decision for their project, has decidedto continue with their project for the third year in a row, and isagain partnering with Saint Joseph’s Convent Senior Girls’ SecondarySchool in India, as well as Fountain Valley School in Denver, Colorado. In doing their research, team members found that the lack of sanitarysupplies in impoverished areas leads medical practitioners to reusemany of these supplies, so the group decided to follow through withtheir plan to procure the needed medical supplies and set up a conduitfor donation of these supplies.

This year, the Mount's secondteam will tackle the challenge of global warming. Last year, the team focused on  the topic of internationalmigration and labor laws with a focus on the problem of humantrafficking, which is becoming one of the fastest growing organizedcrime rings and is extremely difficult to prosecute. TheMount partnered with the Ankka School in Instanbul, Turkey, andthe groups communicated mainly via email and Instant Messenger.
