Mount Saint Joseph Academy Charts New Course as "Pilgrims of Hope" with Labyrinth Unveiling and New Leadership

Historic Catholic institution embraces transformative year with new principal, sacred walking path, and renewed vision for educational excellence
FLOURTOWN, PA – September 8, 2025 – On a day rich with meaning and celebration, Mount Saint Joseph Academy unveiled its newest sacred space—a contemplative labyrinth—while officially welcoming Dr. Melissa Sullivan as the school's new principal, marking a pivotal moment in the institution's journey as "Pilgrims of Hope: Together as One."
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at 9:40 a.m. in the school’s idyllic courtyard, drew together faculty, students, families, and community members to celebrate what President Sister Charlene Diorka, SSJ described as "a threshold moment—a starting point for our community as we walk together into this transformative year."
The timing of Monday's celebration proved especially significant, coinciding with the Feast of the Nativity of Mary and marking the fifth anniversary of Sister Charlene's presidential investiture—a convergence of sacred milestones that underscores the school's commitment to its spiritual foundation while embracing bold new directions under her transformative leadership.

A Path Forward Through Sacred Space
The newly constructed labyrinth represents far more than an architectural addition; it embodies the school's 2025-26 theme of pilgrimage and purposeful journey. Made possible through the generous support of Mount Saint Joseph Academy alumnae and families who attended "Mount Magic—Celebrate and Elevate at the Linc" in March 2025, the labyrinth stands as a testament to the enduring bonds and shared vision of the Mount community.
Lovingly designed and brought to life by board member, alumna, and parent Ellen Rosa-Bian Cericola '82 P'09—who also provided the interior design for the school's newest collaborative space, Clement's Crossing—the labyrinth seamlessly blends spiritual symbolism with thoughtful landscape design. The space features day lilies in honor of Saint Joseph and roses and rose of Sharon celebrating Mary, creating a garden that speaks to the school's foundational saints while providing year-round beauty and inspiration.
Unlike a maze designed to confuse, the labyrinth offers a single, winding path that leads walkers to the center and back out again—a powerful metaphor for the educational journey itself. Four strategically placed benches provide spaces for prayer, meditation, and reflection, each framed by one of four guiding words: Learn, Lead, Listen, Live—principles that encapsulate the Mount Saint Joseph Academy experience and prepare students for lives of purpose and service.
"The labyrinth reminds us that we are called to action," explained Sister Charlene in her annual theme letter to the Mount community. "Walk this path that takes you to your center and sends you back out to the world in service."

Leadership Excellence and Visionary Direction
Dr. Melissa Sullivan, who officially began her tenure on July 1st following a comprehensive nationwide search, brings distinguished expertise and an inspiring vision perfectly aligned with Mount Saint Joseph Academy's mission. With 15 years of leadership in Catholic and independent education, a PhD in English from the University of Delaware, and a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dr. Sullivan represents the school's unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
What distinguishes Dr. Sullivan's approach is her philosophy of "limitless learning" and her conviction that Mount students should develop the skills and confidence to become true "founders" in whatever paths they pursue—a vision that builds powerfully on the school's 165+ year legacy of empowering young women to shape the future.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to support such dedicated faculty and curious, lively students in their educational journeys," shared Dr. Sullivan. "I look forward to joining such a vibrant community where all of our students can develop the skills and confidence to become true 'founders' in whatever paths they pursue."
Dr. Sullivan's extensive experience as Dean of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School demonstrates her proven ability to advance academic strategic plans, integrate innovative technologies, and foster collaborative learning environments. Her commitment to creating student-centered, collaborative environments—guided by the charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph—promises an exciting era of growth and innovation while honoring the school's strong traditions.

Five Years of Transformative Leadership
The labyrinth unveiling also serves as a celebration of Sister Charlene's five years of exceptional presidential leadership at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Since assuming the presidency on July 1, 2020, following her appointment by the Board of Directors and the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Sister Charlene has guided the school through a remarkable period of growth, innovation, and renewed purpose.
Her return to the Mount—where she previously served nine years as a beloved Theology teacher from 1992-2001—was born from what she described as "a strong 'call' to the mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy." That calling has proven transformative, as her leadership has strengthened the Academy's academic programs, deepened its spiritual foundation, and expanded its impact while honoring its deep roots in the charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
"My experience with leadership development has taught me the significance of serving, being an agent of transformation, working collaboratively, and being globally responsible," Sister Charlene shared upon her appointment. Her five-year tenure has embodied these principles with remarkable results, culminating in this year's powerful theme of pilgrimage and hope that captures the Mount community's confident journey under her visionary guidance.
A Jubilee Year of Transformation
The 2025-26 academic year holds special significance as the global Church celebrates a Jubilee Year of Hope—a time for reflection, renewal, and joyful forward movement. Mount Saint Joseph Academy has embraced this sacred timing with enthusiasm, positioning itself as active pilgrims on a journey of educational and spiritual excellence.
This vision aligns powerfully with the school's foundational belief that has guided Mount Saint Joseph Academy since 1858: "On the education of women largely depends the future of society." With Dr. Sullivan now leading alongside Sister Charlene's continued presidential leadership, the school is exceptionally well-positioned to write its next chapter with confidence, combining time-honored traditions with innovative approaches to learning.
"We are not tourists or spectators," emphasized Sister Charlene. "Pilgrims travel with purpose—they know they are on a journey that will shape them. Along the way, the road may be uneven, the path may twist and turn, but still, we walk on, with hope as our compass."
Community Investment in Sacred Purpose
The labyrinth project exemplifies the Mount Saint Joseph Academy community's remarkable commitment to both tradition and innovation. When alumnae, parents, and supporters gathered at Lincoln Financial Field for "Mount Magic—Celebrate and Elevate at the Linc" on March 1, 2025, they chose to invest in more than just a physical structure. Their generous contributions to the Fund a Need initiative created a sacred space that will serve generations of future Mount students, fostering reflection, growth, and preparation for service.
The annual Mount Magic event, held each first Saturday in March, represents the school's largest fundraising effort of the year while strengthening the community connections that make transformative projects like the labyrinth possible. This year's choice of Lincoln Financial Field—home of the 2018 Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles—proved fitting for a community ready to champion its own ambitious vision for continued growth and renewal.
Seeds of Promise and Limitless Potential
As students, faculty, and families gather throughout this milestone year, they carry within them what the school describes as "seeds—of talent, of kindness, of curiosity, of courage, of leadership." The community's shared commitment to nurturing these seeds promises to shape not only individual growth but the continued flourishing of the entire Mount Saint Joseph Academy family.
The labyrinth stands ready to serve as both destination and starting point for these journeys of discovery, offering a sacred space where the Mount community can find clarity, restore balance, enhance creativity, and prepare to serve the world with renewed purpose and unwavering confidence.
This pilgrim mindset reflects the school's commitment to resilience, faith, and purposeful progress while emphasizing community, excellence in learning, and shared growth. The approach recognizes that what appears to be an ending can often serve as a powerful new beginning—much like the design of the labyrinth itself, which leads walkers through transformation and sends them forth renewed.
