The Mount Celebrates Founders' Day: Honoring the Legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph
On Friday, October 11, the Mount Saint Joseph Academy community celebrated Founders’ Day, which officially falls on October 15. This event commemorates the Mount’s rich history and the founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. In the morning, students gathered for an assembly led by the Student Leadership Council (SLC) before taking a mindful walk to the Chapel of the Sisters of Saint Joseph at the Motherhouse on the shared grounds of Chestnut Hill College, where they participated in a special Founders’ Day Liturgy. After returning to campus, students enjoyed a dance party, and took part in service activities honoring the SSJ mission.
Izzy Mellos '25 delivered an inspiring reflection in the Chapel, emphasizing the humble beginnings of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in post-war LePuy, France. She explained, "Six brave Sisters ventured beyond their cloister to serve the dear neighbor. They recognized the needs of single women in their community, teaching them lace-making to help them lead meaningful, independent lives. The courage and determination of these Sisters continue to inspire Mount students today."
Izzy concluded with a final message to her sisters: "Never let anyone hold you back, because you are a Mountie. The education of women largely depends on the future of society. We are all founders, and we are the future of society. As Mounties, with the fearless legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and our unwavering sisterhood, we will continue to serve this mission with strength and compassion for generations to come."
To begin the day, SLC representatives organized a video presentation featuring fellow Seniors, members of our Mount community, and connected Sisters of Saint Joseph living the Mount convent. Each shared what Founders' Day means to them, along with their favorite memories of the historic day. The video included a modern twist with the creation of a "candy salad."
The Mount community truly embraced the incredible legacy of the SSJs this Founders' Day. We hope all felt the spirit of sisterhood and unity, both past and present.
